The challenge

Advanced Energy's lab operations needed a new process cooling plant — and needed it installed without interrupting the work the cooling serves. The plant also had to be economical to run, not just adequate on the day it was commissioned.

The approach

ASE designed and installed the system as prime contractor: a 125-ton chiller paired with a waterside economizer for free cooling whenever Colorado's climate allows it. Design and installation were carried by the same team — the engineer who selected the chiller was in the mechanical room while the piping went in, and equipment was placed with service access settled before anything was set.

Operational constraint

An operating laboratory. The process load the plant serves could not be interrupted during installation or tie-in.

Result

The system went in with no lab downtime and has performed well since startup. Pairing the chiller with a waterside economizer reflects ASE's design philosophy: functional, economical, and built for the owner's operating costs over a 20-year life cycle — not just the day it's commissioned.
